- Read every page and attachment
- Identify the notice number, tax year and response date
- Confirm the name and taxpayer identification details are correct
- Compare the proposed change with the filed return
- Keep the envelope and a complete copy
Before responding
- Gather the filed return and supporting records
- Obtain transcripts if needed
- Do not send original documents unless specifically required
- Avoid making unsupported statements by phone
- Decide whether professional representation is needed
Submission and follow-up
- Use the response method listed in the notice
- Keep proof of fax, upload or certified mailing
- Calendar the expected response period
- Retain copies of everything submitted
- Follow up when the IRS response is overdue or incomplete
